Weekend markets are a real Australian speciality, but I do often find myself disappointed by an over-abundance of uninteresting, tacky or twee imports being flogged by stallholders at outrageously marked-up prices. Even so, I love a good trawl and the very hip Surry Hills Markets are my new (as of Saturday) favourite place to get my treasure hunt on. They're delightfully haphazard and chock-a-bloc with vintage clothes, cool oldy-timey home-wares and furnishings, books, records and home-made crafty things. Plus there still exists the possibility of bagging a real bargain. After we had our fill of the markets we spent the rest of the morning following the Sydney Garage Sale Trail around the neighbourhood and back home again. That was a fantastically fun community event, and I can't wait for it to come around again next year!
Surry Hills Markets are held on the first Saturday of each month at the corner of Crown & Collins Sts in Sydney. Have you been to Surry Hills? Where are your favourite markets?
