Style & Substance:Modern Legacy

If you don’t already recognise her, this is Kaitlyn! She lives in Brisbane, studies Arts & Law, and writes the fabulous style blog Modern Legacy. Her site is an expression of her personal style and an ode to the designers, models, editors and photographers she admires. Right now she’s working hard to finish her degree, but Kaitlyn’s dream isn’t exactly to work in a big city law firm - she is determined to carve out her own niche in the fashion industry {and I wouldn’t be betting against her}. At Modern Legacy, Kaitlyn shows how editorial fashion can be translated into great real-world style. Her own aesthetic is cool and modern with a classic twist. Her signature look mixes perfect prints, vintage pieces and statement jewellery with a healthy dose of lace, oversized garments, high waisted silhouettes and boyfriend blazers. Yes, she's fashion-forward and on a mission to inspire! Kaitlyn certainly has been making her mark as part of a new crop of Australian fashion bloggers who love the industry and are becoming more influential in it. She’s one to keep your eye on, and I can’t wait to see what this Queensland girl gets up to next!

Q: What inspires you lately?

A: The street-style revolution has truly been so inspirational, I think for everybody. We’ve seen a true democratization of fashion over the past few years, where the icons are no longer a small selection of industry elites, but out among the masses. Cash-strapped students mixing the expensive with vintage, a few high-end staples with many cheaper options. Real people taking designer pieces and mixing and matching them in their own unique way. Style borne from necessity is the most inspiring of all.

Q: What have you made recently?

A: Too many purchases and not enough money! Oh and I’ve recently mastered the perfect vegetable curry for Meat-Free Mondays. Yummm.

Q: What item in your closet are you loving most this season?

A: Wide-brim hats and anything leopard print. Both perfect in any season.

Q: What is your ideal meal?

A: I love food that is satisfying, but not overwhelmingly rich. Something fresh, exotic, colourful, a little spicy and loaded with veges would be perfect. Good quality Thai or Indian shared with family and friends is always a winner.

Q: How do you keep looking and feeling your best?

A: Listening to your body is key. Taking time out for yourself to relax and re-charge is so important, and shouldn’t be seen as a mere luxury. It’s an absolute essential! I also try to take note of which foods keep me feeling good and give me energy, and eat these the most. More often than not, they’ll be fresh and not overly processed. And water! Water, water, water. Keeps the skin healthy, glowing and fresh. Win!

Q: What are your go-to beauty products?

A: A good quality, sheer mineral foundation (I use MAC Mineralize Satinfinish SPF 15 Foundation), an oil-free moisturizer (I like Nivea Visage Oil-Free Moisturizing Fluid), and Lucas’ Papaw Ointment – the best lip/everything balm out there.

Q: What are your favourite local haunts?

A: For fashion, I love traipsing around Fortitude Valley and Paddington for more off-beat brands or vintage finds. The Fortitude Valley markets are always a must on weekends. For food, Spoon at James St Markets or Au Cirque in New Farm for breakfast are unbeatable, and for dinner my boyfriend and I can’t go past either Sakana Sushi or Kanishk Indian Restaurant in Clayfield. No better Japanese or Indian anywhere, they’re the best!
