Nips and Tucks (and when to put down the scissors)

by Catherine on January 18, 2011

{mending tears on cotton or linen, re-attaching buttons – yes I can!}

{taking up the straps on a singlet – no problem!}

{taking in an elasticated waistband – I made it work!}

When altering clothings, discretion is the better part of valour. I have developed mending and sewing skills over the past few months of which I’m very proud, but there are some projects that are just too advanced for me to attempt – and some garments are too beautiful for me to risk ruining!

Take these lovely vintage pleated skirts – there’re right on trend but too roomy in the waist. The alteration is complicated by the fine quality of the fabric, the intricate pleats, the issue of the lining. This is a job for a seamstress because I am not willing to sacrifice these pieces to trial and error. I can’t wait to show you how they turn out in upcoming outfit posts!

Hey honey, thanks for stopping by and your kind comments, I am not going short again, but I do love that style. Well done on the alterations, I am quite handy with a sewing machine but I too take special items to the tailors just in case. I can’t wait to see how they turn out and how you style them. Take care and have a great week. ax

Kristen – thanks so much for coming by The Spring. I laughed when I read your comment because in my own mind I’m an amateur seamstress AT BEST! But if you have a machine, it’s easy to start playing around once someone shows you the basics. I made a quilt for my first project to practice stitching in a straight line! I really like your blog – coincidence that we both have posts on emerald – or snooker table – green recently!
